I always hear that the coastal sections of CA, from San Diego up to SF Bay area will eventually “separate” from the California coast line–not sure how that would be possible. I mean, that’s not going to happen after one quake. Perhaps after a thousand years or so, but who knows?

  2. bgoldrock says:

I think what the reporter meant to say is that LA does not have “light rail”, like other CA cities have.

Chile had a 9.5 earthquake in 1960, the highest on recored. I think felolinux is right. But this video was from 94′ so things have improved.
And Chile has WAY more big earthquakes then anywhere in the world. Your rant was so not neccecary. And putting someone down because they live in a 2nd world country? I’m Australian, does that make me 2nd world? NO!
Maybe YOU should check your facts.

It’s impossible for Los Angeles to sink in to the Pacific Ocean. The San Andreas fault is a transform fault, which means it’s going horizontal. For Los Angeles to ‘sink’ into the ocean, it would have to be a Convergent boundary, which means one plate is slipping under the other. And even if it was possible for Los Angeles to sink into the ocean, it would have to be a magnitude of 11 or greater. But in 2 million years It’s possible that San Francisco and LA will be oppisite eachother.

Well Los Angeles is the second most populated city in the US and New Zealend IS the population of LA. Different circumstances. They need the bridges and highways, they just have to upgrade the building codes. Which they have.

A police officer died while driving along one of the roads and didn’t see the collapsed part. I believe the section he died on was named after him :)
