I discovered Dawes on an NPR station (the local Adult Alternative, or “AAA” in Los Angeles, KCSN), along with literally dozens of other great bands/artists, many of them nearly as good as Dawes! And this was LONG before VH1 got wind of them!
Gone are the days to rely on radio (or VH1/MTV/other mainstream sources) to turn you on to great new ROCK artists. Yes, VH1 finally started promoting Dawes, but they miss several acts for every one they DO promote! Now we’ve got to do our own legwork!
I absolutely hate how good stuff like this will only get anywhere from a few thousand to a few million hits; while all of those shitty, generic pop songs will receive tens of millions, and sometimes hundreds of millions of hits. It’s just a disgrace.
That’s just my opinion, don’t be such a crank to somebody who has the same taste in music. It’s no big deal.
I get that you “don’t have the slightest idea what Laurel Canyon sound is”. But apparently, you also don’t have the slightest idea of what Adult Contemporary is, either. Dawes is NOT Adult contemporary.
I just am not that specific a person. I don’t have the slightest idea what “Laurel Canyon Sound” is. I just usually divide acts by what other acts they sound like.
I still rank Vh1 above Mtv! But I get what you mean I can’t remember the last time I watched a video on Mtv! (let alone anything any good), i’ve heard good things about NPR but have never checked it out maybe i will
Too bad VH1 doesn’t spend more time playing & promoting these great under-the-radar bands, instead of running shit like reality TV shows! They’re as bad as MTV! Even VH1 Classic is cutting down on music-related programming now! If you like bands like Dawes, the best place to find similar music, is to check out your local NPR radio station(s), and/or support your local AAA (Adult Alternative) station, if your city has one!
LOL – You didn’t say you were looking for a record store category. And I DID list “AAA”. Collective Soul is “adult contemporary”??? Like Fleetwood Mac, they DO have some ballads that could be regarded as adult contemporary (for sake of space, let’s say “AC”). But the majority of music from either band is definitely NOT AC. Most record stores (the few remaining) would call of these bands, “pop/rock” or just “rock”. NOBODY can rightly call them AC, the category of Celine Dion & Michael Buble!
Nobody puts a section in the CD store called “Laurel Canyon sound”. I would put it with Collective Soul and Fleetwood Mac in the Adult Contemporary section if i ran the CD store, but that’s just my opinion.
Dawes is NOT “adult contemporary” (which is bland, sleepy light pop music)! If their music HAS to be categorized, it can be called the “Laurel Canyon sound”, characterized by laid back harmonies, very similar to Crosby, Stills & Nash, Jackson Browne (who sings on their song, “Fire Away”), and Tom Petty! Or it also fits along with AAA (Adult Album Alternative).

Is it just me, or does this video seem out of character for Dawes? I mean, the girls, the pool, the kiss at the end…am I watching an LFO video?
Being a fully vetted electronic music fan for nearly 15 years, Dawes has stolen the spotlight in my life. I hope more people can be influenced by Dawes as much as I am!
Heard this on 89.9 The Current in Minneapolis and I believe Dawes did a show here a couple months ago. Wish I’d seen it. I love this song. Its amazing.
