Prestige is over rated. Pele said it best, today’s soccer players are mercenaries, they go to the place that pays the most. Which is true of all modern athletes. Again US teams are back by a lot of Billionaires, the Krafts are one. Man City owners, met with Don Garber about buying the NY2 team, which stadium should be done by 2016. However what makes the MLS,and the US other top sports model so special,is it doesn’t rely on Billionaires,it relies on revenue, which means clubs don’t go into debt.

  12. HamerD says:

Right whatever, it’s more complicated than money though. Just because MLS can afford to pay more, the league will have to slowly grow its prestige. Remember, Russian teams will be able to offer more than the USA teams for a long time unless the USA teams start getting backed by mad billionaires who are happy to LOSE money. It will be quite a long time in the future before the MLS grows enough prestige for top quality players to see it as viable and not, as it is currently, one last pay day.

  13. BEASTOFNEWYORK says:

No you make sense, you first said MLS had a tiny following, now you said it’s because the US is a big country? that really doesn’t make sense. Your second point, really doesn’t make any sense. Also I never said we needed to spread soccer, our increasing minority population, is already doing that. NHL is not a massive sport, but still makes near 5 billion a year. MLS, listen now, will be making near 3 billion in 10-12 years.I say this by looking at the age of soccer fans, and by NHL success.

  14. HamerD says:

I’m not sure your points are connected or make any sense. Of course MLS has big attendance figures because a) the USA is big and b) the USA has a lot of fanatical sports followers. But if you want to increase TV revenues like you say you need to SPREAD soccer so it gets picked up as a more popular sport. So exactly like I say, you need to make the culture more accepting in general of soccer. Which I predict is going to be hard because NFL, baseball, basketball are all massive and awesome.

def not irelands best ever…. maybe striker but not player

  16. MexicoHecho says:

MLS quality never.buying up washed up players doesnt mean the league is going to be better than the EPL or be the top leagues in the world.

  17. BEASTOFNEWYORK says:

What?you make no sense. The statistic of top attendance’s,was against top tier div soccer leagues, yet MLS sits top ten. You just made my point, according to you,we have such a tiny following yet we are ahead of a lot of European leagues, with huge following. Soccer is a growing sport in the US, and is popular with people like me, in their twenties. Teams like Seattle sell out 40,000 a game. MLS doesn’t need to be the most popular sport, it needs better TV revenue, yet the product is still good.

  18. BEASTOFNEWYORK says:

The quality of play in MLS doesn’t suck, but I knew you had no clue what you were talking about, when you Mention that the Brazilian league wasn’t good. Also I have seen post on youtube videos from, Sweden, all the way to your country, the UK. So I yes foreigners watch MLS. Also MLS games are hard to get in Europe, which amazes me, because people like you, who really never watches the league, think you know something about the league. I suggest you watch other leagues outside Europe.

  19. HamerD says:

But don’t get me wrong, I think Americans are wonderful sports followers, and you have awesome sports over there. But the cold hard fact right now is that the play quality in MLS sucks, and there is no reason for foreigners to watch it over the myriad of other options there are. If MLS gets better, and removes that salary cap etc, and the American culture embraces soccer more, then we’ll probably be looking at a quality league.

  20. HamerD says:

MLS attendance is high but that’s because your minor leagues have tiny tiny tiny followings whereas the 2nd divisions in the European nations have quite sizeable followings. I have talked to plenty of Americans who tell me that soccer is viewed as a girls’ and children’s sport…if that is wrong then I’m pleased.

You are so bizarrely jingoistic. I think the USA is great and its sports and entertainment are too. The only thing that sucks about it is people blaring on about how great it is.
