Okay, so lots of things have been said about this year’s batch of New Year’s Eve TV broadcasts — mostly about Kathy Griffin bending down to kiss Anderson Cooper’s crotch on CNN’s air. But forget that. Just forget it. It wasn’t important. After you read this post, none of those other faux-NYE messes will be relevant. Why? Because independent local Los Angeles station KDOC’s New Year’s Eve special was the most glorious train wreck to ever grace New Year’s television. It’s so unbelievably bad that it becomes so very, very good. Hosted by a disheveled Jamie Kennedy (remember him?!) and featuring actress Shannon Elizabeth (remember her?!?!), this hot mess live broadcast views like a parody of a parody of a parody of patently bad television. There’s confusion among the hosts and producers, there are flagrant droppings of f-bombs, there are poorly-rehearsed rollings of video segments, there’s side-boob exposure, and there are drugged out performances. Some of the highlights: At one point, the show interviews one of Hugh Hefner’s ex-girlfriends holding a Carl’s Jr. cheeseburger because the burger chain sponsored this hot steaming pile of disaster. Macy Gray (remember her?!?!?!) dropped by to give what seems like a completely stoned performance of that song that won her a Grammy 12 friggin’ years ago. Okay that’s really not possible. The video cuts from the middle of Macy Gray’s performance to interviews in the audience, and in the audience you don’t hear Macy Gray performing anymore, so there had to be a jump in time. No way this video could be live editing.
