April 15, 2019 – LAFD: Truck Explosion Rocks San Pedro

SAN PEDRO – A thunderous explosion heard throughout San Pedro brought scores of Los Angeles Firefighters to the 600 block of North Harbor Boulevard on April 15, 2019, where they discovered a big rig trailer had exploded and caught fire. Though the cargo trailer was heavily damaged and windows in four nearby apartments had shattered, there were amazingly no injuries from the blast, including to the driver of the truck and another big rig operator who was nearby when the explosion occurred. Port of Los Angeles operations and traffic on the nearby Vincent Thomas Bridge continued unabated as an investigation determined that the accidental explosion was likely due to a flammable fuel/air mixture associated with the approximately four vehicles being transported inside the large cargo container. When the big rig drove over a speed bump, the sudden movement likely created an ignition source that rapidly ignited the vapor inside the closed container, creating the explosion.
